Different sites were considered and a place with an altitude of 2538 meters above free sea level at the Sahand Mountains, named Bilindy, was chosen.
Construction on the observatory started in 1979 (one year after the Islamic Revolution). Essential instruments were provided. According to a bilateral contract agreed on during purchase, it was the responsibility of the manufacturer to install and align them. Unfortunately, they did not fulfill their promise. Thus, the instruments were installed by Iranian experts and the responsible University personnel. Now, all three telescopes are in place and in use with the following telescopes:

1) A refactor telescope with a 15-cm diameter and focal distance of 2.25 meters. Its principal use has been for observation of the sun, moon and planets. Included is equipment for photography with different filters, especially a Hα filter for the solar chromospheric research (pruturbesance, flares, etc.). Additional instruments are a complementary micrometer and photometer especially for solar researchers.

2) A cassegrain telescope with a diameter of 40 cm. General equipment includes various oculars and photographic complementary instruments, as well as a micrometer and photometer.

3) A 60 -cm-diameter cassagrain telescope with focal number F/11 and (coude) F/33. Control is by an electronic digitalized panel. Similarly, it is equipped with CCD camera and photometer.

4) The Planetarium : For the instruction and education of young students, the Research institute of applied physics and astronomy of University of Tabriz has been facilated by a planetarium utilizing a "sky master" projector with an internal dome diameter of 10 meters and a capacity for 90 people. Its use began is September 1983. Some 1000 stars and planets are projected on a surface of a celestial sphere. (Daily motions of stars and planets are presented).

The Planetarium explains and demonstrates the celestial motions of the solar system, constellations, nebulae and galaxies. It has a projecting slide system to show sky objects on the dome. It shows the different phases of the moon and the formation of the four seasons, the daily and annular motions of the sun, as well as sunrise and sunset phenomena

5)Siderostat
Siderostat was installed and aligned with the cooperation of Institute of Astrophysics (Paris- France). It is mainly used for studying of solar magnetic field fine structures of solar photosphere chromosphere. (see for details the link of Siderostat)
